October 2018 Inductee - Michael Godfrey

Picture
Our newest member is Michael Godfrey (Middle).

Michael played rugby and cricket in South Africa and when he finished playing most of his friends turned to golf, but he chose to play tennis. He moved to Australia in 2000 with his wife and his two boys.

His background is Telecommunications and Technology and he is currently contracted to Sydney Trains as an interface Manager. He and his wife also run an Amway business.

MichaeI only started playing golf in Australia when he turned 40 and he regrets not starting earlier as he loves the game and can't get enough of it now.

Welcome to Nomads, Michael, we are happy to have you as a member and remember you'll get out of Nomads what you put in!

MARK HOWARD-BROWNE - 100 GAMES MILESTONE

Picture
The 8th Nomads Sydney North Club member to achieve the 100 game milestone, Mark Howard-Browne (left), is congratulated by Captain Michael Hodge at Wakehurst Golf Club on 26 August 2018.

Mark started playing golf in the 1990’s and was a member at Umhlali Golf Club in Ballito. He was inducted in April 2008 with Des Boucher.

He has attended 9 Australian National tournaments missing only the 1st due to a frozen shoulder. Mark has also attended 5 South African Nomads National tournaments and advised that they are a test of fortitude and stamina.

Mark has served on our Committee from 2008 - just 2 months after being inducted and has predominantly controlled the "purse strings" as well as being the Membership Officer. He is still a part of the Charity Day Committee having joined it when Derrick Jones ran the Charity Day in 2008. He served as our Captain in 2014.

He is currently the Australian National President and he first joined NATEX as the National Treasurer in 2014.

In 2012, he was the Tournament Coordinator for the 4th Nationals at Magenta Shores, NSW Central Coast and has been prominently involved in the other 2 tournaments hosted by Norths at The Vintage in 2010 and Cypress Lakes in 2014.

In the 10 years from Jan 2008 since detailed stats were kept, his:

           - Average score is 29.68
            - Highest score – 39 points at Camden Lakeside in Nov 12
            - Lowest score - 21 points at Mona Vale in Jan 16 and has never got a Crying Towel
            - Starting handicap at Nomads was 20
            - Average handicap 20.53
            - Lowest handicap 16 (Dec 15) where he lost in the Knock Out final to Jo Landsberg
            - Highest handicap 24 (Aug 16)

Well done Mark on your achievement.

DES BOUCHER - 7th MEMBER TO REACH 100 GAMES

Picture
Des (left) is now the 7th Nomads Sydney North Club member to get to 100 games. He did that at Wakehurst Golf Club on 26th August 2018 where he was congratulated by Captain Michael Hodge.

He started playing golf regularly only in the early 1990's on sand courses of Botswana. Des was inducted in April 2008 with Mark Howard-Browne at Twin Creeks.

Des has attended 7 Australian National tournaments and won the C Division at the 1st tournament at Noosa in 2009. At the 2012 tournament at The Vintage he won the longest drive playing with Jordan Zunic (although Mark Howard-Browne believes his ball struck the path and rolled all the way down).

He has attended 2 South African Nomads National tournaments - at The Stand, Western Cape and Port Shepstone, kwaZulu Natal.

Des served on the Committee for 4 years in the role of Secretary and Membership Officer.

In the 10 years from Jan 2008 since detailed stats were kept, his:
            - Average score is 29.70
            - Highest score – 39 points at Bayview in Sep 08
            - Lowest score - 22 points at Long Reef in Jul 11
            - Starting handicap at Nomads 17
            - Average handicap 18.23
            - Lowest handicap 13 (Jan 16)
            - Highest handicap 21(Jun 09)

That's a great effort Des, well done!

6th MEMBER TO REACH 100 GAMES - JASON DREVER

Picture
Jason (right) joined Nomads in 2003 around 6 months after the club started.

He has attended 2 Australian National tournaments as he was overseas many times when the tournament was held.

His brother Milton is also a member, however, Jason is a better golfer, better looking, has a higher intelligence and is MUCH, MUCH YOUNGER

In the 10 years from Jan 2008 since detailed stats were kept:
    • Average score is 29.31
    • Highest score – 41 points at Mona Vale in Nov 15
    • Lowest score - 19 points at Kooindah Waters in Jan where he did not even get the Crying Towel!
    • Average handicap 11.44
    • Lowest handicap 8 (Feb 08)
    • Highest handicap 15 (Mar 12)

So in his 100 games he has only shot +40 points once and he has got the Crying Towel once.

Good work Bob and well done

Another April 2018 Inductee - Robert Mey

Picture
Robert was introduced to the Nomad Sydney North by Ado Van Rensburg.

Rob has been in Sydney, Australia for 8 years with his wife Michelle and they have been married for 10 years.

Rob is a Chartered Accountant and works at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia where he has been for 5 years in various finance business partnering roles within the Wealth Management and Technology divisions.

Outside of work Rob is an enthusiastic rugby union supporter and has been refereeing in the Sydney Premier Competition over the last 5 years. He is big fan of the Blue Bulls, as they are from his hometown of Pretoria. (ED. We'll look to put you in an exclusive 3-ball of other tragic Blue Bulls Supporters, Johan Landsberg and Kevin Loggenberg)

Rob has always been a social golfer, but is keen to improve his handicap.

Welcome to Nomads, Robert, and remember you'll get out of Nomads what you put in!

April 2018 Inductee - Justin Amos

Picture
Picture
Justin Amos receiving his Nomads gear after being inducted at Asquith Golf Club on 15th April 2018, by Nomads Sydney North Captain, Michael Hodge.

Justin flexing his muscles at New South Wales recently
A bit of background on our newest member:

As a well travelled Yorkshireman and a big Sheffield United fan, Justin moved to Sydney in 2016 from London with his wife Jean and now 4 year old daughter, Aria.

Justin played many sports as a younger man and having been a half-decent amateur footballer and tennis player he really didn't have much opportunity to play golf.  As time and gravity took its toll, he finally made the decision and took up the beautiful game of golf in 2004
(mainly as a replacement for football) as he was missing the camaraderie of team sports and it's been a journey of his (self) discovery ever since.

Thankfully, he has not yet broken a club in rage yet, but he has taken on a few small shrubs with a sand wedge....

His working life has been in capital markets (JP Morgan): for the last decade in FinTech start-up land and more recently in Blockchain and Crypto Assets. Justin is a director at PwC advising in these exciting fields.

Justin's favorite type of golf course is a Links course because of the scenic beauty, challenging weather conditions and fast greens - that and the fact that he spray it off the tee, he can still get it back...

Welcome to Nomads, Justin, and remember you'll get out of Nomads what you put in!

In May, Souths will be hosting the North v South Club Challenge and hopefully we can deliver a resounding victory like Captain DJ Carrick did in 2017.
