KEN ADELINE - 100 GAMES

Picture
Ken Adeline (2nd right) is the 10th Nomads Sydney North member to play 100th games and he did that at Asquith in September 2019. He was awarded his 100 game badge at the Magenta Shores Nationals in October 2019 by National President, Mark Howard-Browne.

Here is some interesting info about Ken:
  • He started hacking around with a few mates at Huddle Park, Jo’burg in his mid-twenties (30 years ago), more for the fun, laughs and beers at the end
  • Ken still plays with those guys when he’s back in Jo’burg and nothing has changed: except the Castle Lager beer glasses have got taller
  • He was  a member at Dainfern Country Club in Fourways, and was also a member of the Corporate Cup Challenge (similar to Nomads format)
  • Inducted in Jan 2004  - his Proposer was Johan Landsberg and his Seconder was Wayne Richardson
  • He attended his 7th Australian National tournament at Magenta Shores in October 2019
  • In the 10 years from Jan 2008 since detailed stats were kept:
    • Average score is 29.79
    • Highest score – 39 points 3 times:
      • at Riverside Oaks in Dec 09
      • at Riverside Oaks in Apr 14
      • at Stone Cutters Ridge in Feb 17
    • Lowest score - 19 points also Long Reef in Mar 17 (the month after he scored 39 points and his handicap was cut to 7)
    • Starting handicap at Nomads was 14
    • Average handicap 12.44
    • Lowest handicap was 7 (Mar 17)
    • Highest handicap was 17 (Apr 13)

Congratulations Ken on getting to 100 games and here's looking forward to the next 100....

FURTHERANCE OF GOLF 2019

Picture
Australian National President, Mark Howard-Browne, with Millie Komulainen, Captain Peter Hodge and Kai Komulainen.
(Missing from the pic was Noah...)
Each year, in conjunction with the CEO of Jack Newton, Peter van Wegen, deserving juniors are identified and are put forward by JNJG to the Nomads Sydney North Committee for consideration.

On Sunday 28 April 2019, Sydney North Captain, Peter Hodge, was pleased to announce that the Jack Newton Junior Golf Scholarship recipients for 2019 were Kai, Noah and Millie Komulainen.

A cheque of $4,000 was handed over to JNJG to administer, on behalf of the Komulainen Kids, and this will be used to assist them in meeting some of the costs in getting to tournaments around NSW. It was pleasing to see their parents, Jani and Tammi at Long Reef on Sunday, with Jani chaperoning Millie as Peter van Wegen pulled out early that morning with an injury.

At 13, Kai is particularly impressive and off a scratch handicap, he scored 3 under on Sunday. Very impressive indeed and that even got the attention of our best golfer, Andrew Brown. Noah plays off a 9 handicap and Millie of 13. Both handy golfers at their ages.

Kai, Noah and Millie, we look forward to your development with JNJG and hope you have a lot of fun while growing in the game of golf.

Other Furtherance of Golf committed for 2019
Sydney North has paid a further $2,000 to the JNJG National Initiative where 6 golfers (2 from each of NSW, QLD and WA) will go to play in the Nomads SA Boys U17 Championship at St Francis Links Golf Club, South Africa, in early July.

February 2019 Inductee - Danie Fourie

Picture
Club Captain, Peter Hodge, welcomes Danie Fourie at Riverside Oaks Golf Resort on 17 February 2019
Danie arrived in Sydney the 1st of July 2018. He works as a sales consultant for a South African software firm which expanded to Australia. The software is used to manage audit and accounting firms.

Danie lived the past 20 years in Blouberg in Cape Town and would love to retire on the South African West Coast with Australian dollars.

Werner Combrinck introduced Danie to the Nomads, and at the very first game John Erasmus invited him for a braai after the game. This is when Danie knew that Nomads was for him and he had to join!!

Danie is still not as efficient at throwing clubs as Werner…but with a little practice he will get there.

Besides golf, Danie’s other love is music and very soon he will once again be in a band.

Danie arrived solo here in Sydney and has no kids or wife…watch out Aussie ladies!!!

Welcome to our Club, Danie, we hope you'll participate and get the enjoyment helping those less fortunate whilst playing golf.

January 2019 Inductee - Peter Whalley

Picture
Peter with his wife, Rene and children.

Peter was born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa, and earned his living in England, France, Germany and now Australia.

Having arrived on Australian shores back in 2002, he initially worked for the Softline Group (Pastel Accounting) but now runs his own software business, developing and distributing Accounting add-on’s, working with Partners in Aus, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland.

Pete’s decided to start playing golf because the days of playing 045 Div 1 Football (soccer) will undoubtedly come to an end, in the next few years. Golf seemed a better option and a great opportunity to develop new skills. And it’s all thanks to Kevin Rule, who introduced him to Nomads.

With two children, 12 and 14 and wife Rene, life is pretty busy with school, kids sports and social events every dang weekend!

Off the course, Peter enjoys coffee roasting, Japanese knife sharpening and looking at Swedish Supermodels.  No particular order.

If you show the same dedication of your sponsor, Kevin Rule, you will undoubtedly become a fine Nomads.

January 2019 Inductee - Craig Vermeulen

Picture
Craig moved to Australia a year ago with his wife and 2 daughters. He has a software development background and is working as a Project Manager at OPSI Systems Australia.

He is a keen golfer, having been a member at Randpark in Johannesburg for several years with a regular Sunday morning 4 ball, however, he has never been more than a social golfer handicap wise as it is not his primary sport. His primary sport is target shooting, specialising in the ISSF 50m rifle disciplines. He has his NSW licence now and will start competing again shortly.

He hasn't played much golf since he arrived in Australia, so is very much looking forward to getting back into it and meeting more Nomads members.

Welcome to our Club, Craig, your exciting journey in Nomads is  about to begin.

KEVIN RULE - 9th MEMBER TO REACH 100 GAMES

Picture
Kevin Rule is only the 9th Nomads Sydney North to play his 100th game and he did that at Mona Vale Golf Club on 20th January 2019.

Here are some interesting info on Kevin's journey at Nomads:
• Started playing golf in the mid 70’s when he was at high school
• While his main focus was cricket and hockey he was a member at Parkview Golf Club in Johannesburg
• He was inducted into Nomads in March 2006 and his proposer was Gordon Hatch
• Kevin has attended 2 Australian National tournaments
• In the 10 years from Jan 2008 since detailed stats were kept:
   - His average score is 29.60
   - His highest score – 41 points at Long Reef in Mar 15
   - His lowest score - 15 points also at Long Reef in Jul 15
(from Rooster to Feather duster in matter of 4 months)
   - His starting handicap at Nomads was 8
   - His average handicap 9.72 with his lowest being 6 (Jan 16) and his highest handicap 14 (Aug 10)

Well done Kevin on achieving this milestone, you are a great Club member and we look forward to at least another 30 good years with you.
