Sponsorship & Participation
The Nomads purpose (“through golf helping others”) has delivered a long tradition of successful charity days. The 2013 Charity Day is to be held on Tuesday 26th November at the Long Reef Golf Course.
This year’s event is being held to raise funds for Cancer Council NSW osteosarcoma research. This is the most common form of bone cancer which usually affects young children. Thankfully it is very rare, with only ten cases being diagnosed on average in children under 15 each year in Australia.
While osteosarcoma is rare, bone cancer overall is less rare as other cancers often spread to the bone. Just this year, Cancer Council NSW has started funding for a new grant to investigate how bone cancers are affected by Vitamin D. It turns out that Vitamin D actually helps to prevent bone cancers from growing, and the researchers, led by Prof Marcus Seibel, from the Bone Research Program at the ANZ Research Institute are working to understand why. The money we raise will be directed into this grant and make a difference in raising awareness and growing our understanding of this rare cancer.
Cancer Council NSW is the leading cancer charity in NSW and aims to bring about significant improvement in cancer outcomes through research and community programs.
As a volunteer lead organisation Cancer Council relies on the generosity of the community to help in achieve its mission, “To defeat cancer through engaging the community.”
Once again Jack Newton Junior Golf has secured the golf course and will help run activities on the day, adding to its success. Nomads will make an appropriate donation to Jack Newton Junior Golf for their contribution to the event.
