MEMBERS CHARITY DAY DRAW DECEMBER 2024

In 2023, your Committee decided to include the $50 Raffle tickets in the Annual subscription so that all members contributed to the very reason why we belong to Nomads.

We have around 50% of our members playing in the Charity Day, so it was decided that there would be a separate Members Charity Day Raffle and the draw would be done at the Gold Cup game in December at Riverside Oaks.

Our VC, Ryan van der Walt set aside a number of prizes, to the value of over $2,200 for the Members Draw and the Winners were:

JNJG 2024 SERVICE TO JUNIOR GOLF AWARD

Picture

Johan Landsberg and Mark Howard-Browne accept the 2024 Service to Junior Golf Award

Nomads Sydney North and Sydney South members were invited to the Jack Newton Junior Golf Sponsors Golf Day and Presentation Dinner at Strathfield Golf Club.

Nomads Golf Club was awarded the 2024 service to Junior Golf Award.

This is what presenter Emily Leong had to say in introducing the award:

It is a great privilege to present the Service to Junior Golf Award, an accolade that recognises outstanding contributions to the development of junior golf. Tonight, this award goes to an organisation that has been a remarkable partner to both Jack Newton Junior Golf and the young golfers who have benefited from its generosity over many years.

This organisation has built an incredible legacy of support for junior golf. Their relationship with JNJG spans more than a decade, and throughout this time, they have made an enduring impact on the lives of countless young golfers. Their dedication to the growth of junior golf is truly exceptional. This award is not just for the support they have given this season, but for their commitment over the course of more than 10 years.

The contribution to junior golf isn’t just about financial support, although the amount of money they’re raised over the years is nothing short of extraordinary. They have consistently stepped up to fund initiatives that directly benefit young golfers, from providing tournament entry fees to supporting overseas opportunities for players to test their games against the world’s best. Through their hard work and generosity, they have helped create opportunities that have allowed juniors to focus on their development without the burden if the financial constraints involved in playing this great game.

Perhaps one of the most significant ways they have helped is through their scholarship programs. These scholarships have opened doors for junior golfers, giving them the chance to access coaching, tournaments, and opportunities that they may not have had otherwise. They have helped turn potential into success by offering the tools and resources that young athletes need to take their game to the next level, with the list pf players who received these scholarships as juniors to now make the step to the professional level getting longer by the day.

Beyond these numbers, the most important aspect of this partnership has been the genuine care and commitment that they have shown towards the future of junior golf. They have not just supported the sport; they have become a vital part of the community, providing a pathway for juniors to excel. Their ongoing dedication reflects their belief in the power of golf to shape the next generation of athletes, leaders and individuals.

Their support has made a lasting impact, and we look forward to continuing this important partnership for many years to come.

I am honoured to recognise Nomads Golf Club as the 2024 Service to Junior Golf Award Winners.
I’d like to ask Mark Howard-Browne and Johan Landsberg to accept this award.

NOMADS TIE AWARDS

This month we recognise the members who have achieved 20 and 5 years of membership of Nomads Sydney North
20 Year tie for Jason Drever and a 5-year tie for Rudi Engelbrecht

QUINTUS STRYDOM - 100 GAMES

Picture
The 17th Nomads Sydney North Club member to achieve the 100-game milestone, Quintus (left), is congratulated by Captain Rouan Snyman at Long Reef on 22nd September 2024.

Quintus started playing golf at a very young age as his father was a very keen golfer. He remembers going with him on a Saturday morning to golf and he would caddie for him. Quintus started to play more regularly in high school during school holidays and after school and the army. He joined Randpark as a junior in 1979 and was a member there until he left South Africa in 2001. (22 years)

H enjoys golf although sometimes it frustrates the hell out of him. No hole in one – like most of us he has been close but still trying for the first one.

In January or February of 2004, he met some guys who were playing Nomads and then met Wayne Richardson, Johan Landsberg, Mark Thompson and Derrick Jones to name a few and played his first game at Bayview in March 2004. Quintus remembers shooting 79 off a 6 handicap and coming second on the day and he thought this was a tough school…. He served on the committee in 2005 & 2006 and has been a member ever since with a slight 2 year break, and is happy to be back.

His father was a member of Nomads in South Africa and was a member of Gauteng (I remembers the red pants and white shirts). His father was a member for 15+ years and he was also a member at Randpark for 25+years

He has attended 6 Australian National tournaments.

In the 16 years since accurate scores were recorded, his:

  • Average score is 29.22
  • Highest score – 41 points (off a 17 handicap) here at Long Reef in Jan 10
  • Had his 2nd 40 pointer, scoring 40 points at Mona Vale in April 24 (he’s a member here)
  • Lowest score - 15 points at in Feb 18
  • Starting handicap at Nomads was 6
  • Average handicap 14.51
  • Lowest handicap 4 (Mar 04)
  • Highest handicap 18 (Dec 09)

Congrats Quintus!

JOHN ERASMUS - 100 GAMES

Picture
The 15th Nomads Sydney North Club member to achieve the 100-game milestone, John Erasmus (left), is congratulated by Captain Rouan Snyman at Long Reef on 22nd September 2024.

A Milestone of 100 Golf Games with the Nomads Australia

(This number of 100 games does not include the games played while in Perth while raising the Perth Club – very significant number of games excluded from this count as it was not yet a Nomads club)
John Erasmus has reached a remarkable milestone by completing 100 games with our club. Here's a look at his impressive journey and contributions to the golfing community:
  • First Game: John played his inaugural game with the club under the guidance of his proposer, Oscar Finn
    • John was inducted into our Club in 2004
    • This marked the beginning of his enduring relationship with our golfing family
  • Club Contributions:
    • Committee member : North Sydney or the Sydney club as it was at the time
    • Nationals Coordinator: In 2010, he played a pivotal role as the Nationals Coordinator for the 2nd Vintage Nationals, showcasing his organizational skills and dedication
    • Founding the 4th Club: John was the driving force behind the creation of the 4th Club, a project that took almost two years to realize. His leadership helped the club grow to over 80 members at its peak
    • Club Captaincy: As Club Captain at Perth Nomads, John demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and excellence
  • Tournament Participation:
    • John has been a regular attendee at all Australian National tournaments, further extending his passion to numerous events in South Africa.
    • He participated in the Highland Gate event, a prestigious competition between Norths and Gauteng
    • Looking ahead, John is set to play in the inaugural UK Nomads National tournament in July 2024, adding another chapter to his rich golfing journey
  • Philosophical Outlook: A strong believer in the interconnectedness of people, John draws inspiration from the famous words of John Donne’s "No Man Is an Island":
“No man is an island, Entire of itself; Every man is a piece of the continent, A part of the maine”
  • Golfing Achievements:
    • Over his years with the club, John’s game has shown remarkable consistency and growth:
      • Average Score: 30.14
      • Highest Score: 41 points at Wakehurst in Aug 18
      • Lowest Score: 23 points at Kooindah Waters in Jun 11 and has never got a Crying Towel
      • Starting Handicap: John began his journey with a starting handicap of 18
      • Average Handicap: 18.06
      • Handicap Range: His lowest recorded handicap was 13 in Oct 23, and his highest was 22 in Mar 08

John’s dedication and enthusiasm continue to inspire fellow members. His contributions and achievements are a testament to his love for the game and the community he has helped to build.

Congratulations, John, on reaching this incredible milestone. We look forward to many more rounds and memories with you.

KEVIN PARKER - 100 GAMES

Picture
The 16th Nomads Sydney North Club member to achieve the 100-game milestone, Kevin Parker (left), is congratulated by Captain Rouan Snyman at Riverside Oaks on 21st July 2024.

Kevin started playing golf at the age of 14 in Zimbabwe as part of junior golf, which was an initiative to grow golf in Zim and was a good way for parents to get their kids out their hair for the day, during school holidays. He has a great love for the game and hopes to start playing more golf soon, better golf at that !

He was inducted in February 2009 and he was proposed by Steve Betts

FURTHERANCE OF GOLF 2024

Picture
Captain Rouan Snyman announced, at Wakehurst Golf Club on Sunday 17th March 2024, that the Nomads Sydney North Scholarship Recipients for 2024 were Zoe Arcus and Liam Jordan.
Each year, in conjunction with the General Manager of Jack Newton Junior Golf, Dale Hughes, deserving juniors are identified and are put forward by JNJG to the Nomads Sydney North Committee for consideration.

On Sunday 17 March 2024, at Wakehurst Golf Club, Sydney North Captain, Rouan Snyman, was pleased to announce that the Jack Newton Junior Golf Scholarship recipients for 2024 were Zoe Arcus and Liam Jordan. Unfortunately, Liam didn't play in the monthly game as he had to play his Pennants match at Manly Golf Club on the same morning.

A cheque of $4,000 was handed over to JNJG to administer, on behalf of Zoe and Liam, and this will be used to assist them in meeting some of the costs in getting to tournaments around NSW. It was pleasing to see their Dads' Matt Arcus and Paul Jordan at the presentation.

Zoe is a member of Cromer Golf Club and her current handicap is +2.8. She is for the 2nd year in the JNJG Development Squad and prior to that was in the JNJG Metro Academy. Her best results include the Winner of Sydney Week of Golf 2024 shooting even par, Winner of the 2024 Webex Junior Players Series in the Hunter Valley and the Winner of the 14/15 Girls Peter O’Malley Junior Masters at Bathurst GC.

Her goals are to improve her consistency and short game, possibly obtain a US College Golf Scholarship and eventually play Ladies professional Golf.

Zoe is in Year 12 at Oxford Grammar and besides golf she has excelled at basketball, cross country, swimming and athletics where she was ranked 2nd in State and holds the School record.

Liam has been playing golf for 3.5 years and is a member of Manly GC and Wakehurst GC.  He is currently playing off 1 and has been a member of the Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) Sydney North Academy for the last 2 years.  Some of Liam’s notable tournament results include 4th in the 14/15yo age group in the 2024 JNJG Sydney Week of Golf, 2nd overall at the 2023 JNJG Brett Ogle Junior Masters and 2nd in the U16s at the 2023 Faldo Series.

Liam played in his first JNJG tournament in 2021, when he was 12, at Shelly Beach, and has travelled to many tournaments around the State since then, including Goulburn, Byron Bay, Batemans Bay, Wagga Wagga and Bathurst.  Liam is also involved in surf lifesaving, as both a volunteer and competitor, at Manly LSC.  As well as representing his school for golf, Liam has also represented his school at NSW State level as part of the school water polo team and he has also represented his school at the NSW State swimming championships for the past 5 years.

Zoe and Liam, we look forward to your development with JNJG and hope you have a lot of fun while growing in the game of golf.
