About our Charity Golf Day
When: Tuesday 22 November, 2016
Where: Long Reef Golf Course
Time: 12pm
Beneficiaries: Cancer Council NSW & Jack Newton Junior Golf
This year’s charity golf day will be raising awareness and vital funds for the children’s cancer research of Cancer Council NSW.
About Cancer Council NSW
Cancer Council NSW is a community focused and 97% community funded cancer charity dedicated to the defeat of cancer. Around 1 in 2 people in NSW will develop cancer by the age of 85 with more than 37,500 new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed this year alone.
Together with supporters, stakeholders, staff and volunteers, Cancer Council NSW is committed to reducing the impact of cancer on individuals and the community, and to lessening the burden for people affected by cancer.
Cancer Council is the only organisation that works across every area of every cancer:
Cancer Council NSW is a member of Cancer Council Australia, together with Cancer Councils from every state and territory across Australia.
Children’s Cancer Research and Professor Murray Norris’ Research
Around 950 children and adolescents in Australia are diagnosed with cancer every year, with nearly 3 children and adolescents dying from cancer each week. The most commonly diagnosed childhood cancers are leukaemia, brain cancer, lymphoma and neuroblastoma. 60 years ago, childhood cancer was nearly always fatal, however the promising news is that today, 8 out of 10 children will survive.
Professor Murray Norris AM, Children’s Cancer Institute
Your sponsorship will directly contribute to Professor Murray Norris and his team at the Children’s Cancer Institute who are extending their work on molecular targeted therapies, with the aim of improving treatment options and survival rates for children with leukaemia.
Leukaemia is one of the most common causes of death from disease in children. Current treatments for childhood leukaemia are highly toxic, and this can cause some very serious side effects. Sadly, up to 70% of childhood cancer survivors will end up with chronic health issues that follow them into adulthood, including infertility, heart disease, secondary cancer and mental health problems. Thanks to a new 5-year grant from Cancer Council NSW that your sponsorship will directly contribute to, Professor Murray Norris will address this issue by creating ‘targeted’ therapies for children with leukaemia. These drugs are designed to kill the cancer cells but be less toxic to healthy tissue, and this will reduce the side effects and improve quality of life. Professor Norris’ team is also exploring how to stop cells from turning into leukaemia in the first place, and ultimately this could lead to the development of a leukaemia prevention strategy.
